In these parts, he is simply known at "Billy Basketball".

Bill Byrne didn't waste any time making his presence felt in the AU basketball program. After a standout career at North Syracuse High School, Byrne averaged 17.6 points per game and hauled in 126 rebounds in his freshman season. And that was merely a prelude to a career that is previously unparalleled in AU basketball history.

Byrne went on to average over 20 points per game in his final three seasons to become the school's all-time leading scorer (at the time) with 1,931 points, permanently putting his name in the AU men's basketball record book. He ranks second all-time in AU history at the time of his induction.

Byrne holds records in points scored in a game (46), field goals made in a career (710), field goals made in a game (19) and free throws made in a career (511). He is one of only two AU men's basketball players ever to be named to the NABC East Region First Team at the time of induction.

Byrne lists his biggest thrill at AU as having his jersey (No. 20) retired at the conclusion of his senior season.
