It is doubtful that any student-athlete in AU history has been credited with a win or tie by themselves: with the possible exception of Fred Gibbs.
Gibbs, a standout on Alex Yunevich's football teams of 1950-52 and the AU wrestling team from 1950-54, is one of four generations of Gibbs to play intercollegiate sports at AU. He also has a very memorable career highlight from his football playing days. Gibbs remembers:
"In 1952 we were undefeated and heavily favored to defeat Hobart in the final game. That day I had permission to skip the team bus and rode to Hobart with friends, including my future wife (Janice)."
At halftime, AU trailed 13-0 "and Alex lambasted us concerning our lower level of play. Suddenly he turned to me and said 'I don't what you were doing in that car, this is the worst football I have ever seen you play and I have seen you play some lousy football.' I was humiliated. In the second half Hobart received. I sacked the quarterback three times, then blocked a punt that rolled into the end zone and was recovered by one of our players for a touchdown. Son we were leading 20-13 (although the game ended tied 20-20)."
"The next day the Buffalo Evening News ran a story on the game entitled 'Gibbs Ties Hobart;"
Aside from his football heroics, Gibbs also was undefeated on the mat in 1953 in the regular season and in 1954 won the bronze medal at the 4-I Tournament.
