Mark Baker was a four-year member of the AU swimming & diving team from 2005-2009, leading the Saxons to three consecutive Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) Championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009. During that period, Baker secured 16 Empire 8 Championship titles including four titles in the 200-free relay and the 400-free relay. He also aided the Saxons in winning the 200-medley relay three times, the 400-medley relay twice and the 800-free relay twice. The 200-medley relay team of Mark Baker, twin brother Matthew Baker, Brian Agro and Zach Mix holds the AU school record with a time of 1:32.34.

Individually, Mark Baker won one Empire 8 title in the 50 free during the 2006-07 season. He also earned Empire 8 All-Conference Second Team honors in the 100 free twice while earning Second Team honors in the 200 free and 50 free once.

Following his departure from Alfred University, Mark went on to earn his Ph.D. in Biostatistics from the University at Buffalo.

Head coach Brian Striker remarks in his letter of recommendation, “Mark LOVED swimming. To him, swim season was not simply between October and February - it was a year-round commitment.”

Mark notes that his biggest thrill as an AU student-athletes was “when we won the Empire 8 conference championship meet my sophomore year and took a celebratory jump in the pool as a team. My next biggest thrill as an Alfred athlete was breaking the 50 freestyle record.”

Baker is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the State University of New York at Oswego.
