Athlete, coach, sports official, athletic director, teacher, principal, superintendent, headmaster, director of admissions. LoBaugh has done it all.
Born in Ridgeway, PA, he was an outstanding football and basketball player. He played both sports at Alfred University. In a game against Allegany College in 1922, LoBaugh returned an intercepted pass 97 yards for a touchdown. This still stands as one of the longest returns in program history.
LoBaugh also kicked a 35-yard field goal against Rutgers in 1925. this was an AU record for many years. He earned seven varsity letters in football, basketball and track & field.
During his senior year at AU, he also coached boys and girls basketball teams at Alfred High School.
He was coach as Islip High School, Freeport High School, and superintendent of schools in Lindenhurst. He produced championship teams in several sports at three high schools.
LoBaugh is believed to be the first starter in track & field to use a gun in each hand (one to start and one to recall). He also introduced colored sleeves to make the starter more noticeable.Â
He has been honored by many groups for his long service to athletics and education.
