NEW YORK, NY – Several members of the Alfred University men's and women's track and field teams are set to compete this weekend at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) indoor championships.
The ECAC indoor championships are being held Friday and Saturday, March 6 and 7, at The Armory in New York City.
For AU senior
Miasia Hillman (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech), the ECAC meet represents a final chance to solidify her national rankings in two sprint events ahead of the NCAA Division III championships March 13 and 14 in Winston-Salem, NC.
Hillman, competing last weekend at the New York State indoor championships at RIT, won state titles in the 60-meter dash (7.84 seconds) and 200-meter dash (school-record 25.63 seconds). Her season-best times in the 60 meters (7.77 seconds) and 200 meters (25.63 seconds) rank 15
th and 17
th, respectively, in the nation this year. The top 16 in each event qualify for the NCAA championships. Hillman, who made the NCAA outdoor field in the 100-meter dash last spring, is seeking her first-ever appearance at the indoor nationals.
AU sophomore
Mary Baughman (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) is also set to compete at the ECAC championships, as is the Saxon women's 4x200-meter relay team. Baughman will run the 5,000-meter race; she ran a school-record 17:45.10 in winning a state title in the 5,000 meters last weekend. Her 5,000 meter time ranks 31
st in the nation.
Senior
Corine Pettit (Strykersville, NY/Holland), sophomore
Marissa Colburn (Bridgeport, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), freshman
Mijoi Powell (Rochester, NY/Mercy) and Hillman will run the 4x200 relay. They turned in a season-best time of 1:50.09 at the state championships.
Three members of the AU men's team will be competing at the ECAC meet: sophomore
Jeffrey Nunez (Wurtsboro, NY/Ellenville) in the weight throw; junior
Ian Bishop (Bronx, NY/Bronxville Prep) in the shot put; and freshman
Seth Spicer (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) in the heptathlon.
Nunez has a season-best 15.92 meters (76
th in the nation), set when he placed second in the weight throw at the Empire 8 Conference championships Feb. 14 at Houghton College. Bishop's best mark this season in the shot put is 14.50 meters, set when he placed second at the Empire 8 meet. Spicer's season-best 4,223 points in the heptathlon, established when he placed fourth at the state championships, ranks 58
th in the country.
