ALFRED, NY – As the calendar turns to the new year, so does a new season for the Alfred University men's alpine skiing side.

The Saxons are led by head coach Bob Cilino '13 in his eighth season at the helm. His continual presence as a member of the skiing program for over 15 years has led to the growth and enjoyment of the program.

"Last year we just went out there and had some fun," Cilino said. "We got things out there and went in stride, and this year will be more of that."

Cilino has Kevin Voegelin (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) returning to the slopes this season. He comes in leading the way for the two newest members, Garrett Farabaugh (Abington, PA/Abington Senior) and Esa Jack Connelly (Schuylerville, NY/Schuylerville).

Voegelin and Farabaugh enter the season more prepared than others, giving them a distinct edge. Both competed on the men's cross country team last fall.

"They have different skills they can rely on," Cilino said about his skiers competing in various fall sports. "It helps them stay fit in the offseason while practicing their form."

Alfred University competed in several races last year, but will have more opportunities to score with more competitors. The Saxons competed at a variety of mountains in the 2024 season through the span of two months.

They'll be looking to tame the mountains again every weekend starting on January 18 at West Mountain. But they also are aware of their seasonal situation: compete and have fun doing so.

"It all boils down to having fun," Cilino said. "There's no point in not having fun. In the end, all the drills we intersperse free skiing and put it all to use, while still having fun."
