QUEENSBURY, NY -- The Alfred University men's alpine skiing team opened its season on the slopes at West Mountain in eighth in the giant slalom and 10th in the slalom.
"It was a weekend of unknowns with new athletes who I hadn't seen race yet and returning athletes who had improved so we were going through the weekend one step at a time," Head Coach
Bob Cilino '13 said. "It was a weekend to show resilience and determination and the first race and we have many more."
Garrett Farabaugh (Abington, PA/Abington Senior) impressed with improved times all throughout the weekend. He upped his second GS run by two seconds for a time of 1:32.23, combining for a time of 3:06.72. In Sunday's slalom, his second run improved by almost five seconds at 1:23.73. His combined time came in at 2:51.70.
Vinci Armas (Winter Garden, FL/Horizon) also saw improvement by five seconds in Saturday's giant slalom, coming in at 1:33.32 in his second run for his combined time of 3:11.73.
Kevin Voegelin (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) led the way with a 1:16.79 in his lone run in the slalom, and a team-leading combined time of 2:41.30 in the GS on Saturday.
AU will next head to Labrador Mountain for a slalom race on Saturday, while taking on the giant slalom course at Greek Peak the following day.
