ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University's Nelly Mbugeni (Tanga, Tanzania/Masai Girls) was named the Empire 8 Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday.
 
Mbugeni had a strong start to her collegiate career as she helped AU pick up a season-opening win over Pitt-Bradford on Saturday. She pulled down 11 rebounds (five offensive boards) while going a perfect 2-for-2 from the floor (including a fast break layup) and adding one assist in 16 minutes of play.
 
Mbugeni and the Saxons will next play Day One hosts of the Alfred Tournament, hosting Hiram College on Saturday, November 16.
