Saxons End Season in E8 First Round; Chest Sets New Single-Season Scoring Mark

ROCHESTER, NY – The No. 8 Alfred University women's basketball team ended its season with a 75-50 loss to No. 1 Nazareth University in the Empire 8 first round on Saturday.
The Saxons (11-15, 5-11 Empire 8) were outscored in the first three quarters but had a 20-12 advantage in the fourth against the Golden Flyers (22-4, 15-1 Empire 8). Unfortunately, Nazareth University built a large lead by as many as 33 points, which AU was unable to overcome.

Jaidyn Chest (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) led with 17 points, three rebounds and an assist. At the 5:52 mark of the second quarter, she drained a 3-point shot to become the program's new all-time single-season leader in points. The junior  finishes the year with a total of 434 points. With this, Chest breaks a 40-year record set by Heidi Aldous '87 during the 1985-86 season.

Ashaya Wallace (Elmira, NY/Elmira) registered nine points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Natalee Collins (Waterville, NY/Waterville), who played in her final collegiate game, finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

The Saxons shot 19-of-55 from the field, 5-of-18 at the 3-point line and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. The Golden Flyers went 30-of-72 overall, 5-of-22 from behind the arc and 10-of-13 at the charity stripe.

"We started out defending really poorly and were getting beat 1 vs.1 without the ball, giving them a double-digit lead," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "We had another slow start to the half where we put them on the line a lot. Our fourth quarter was some of our better basketball this year and I'm proud of our competitive level when we certainly could've given in to the circumstances. Natalee [Collins], the player, will absolutely be missed. She brought consistency and just wanted to get better everyday. But what we'll miss most is the person she is and the giant heart she has. She and the Collins family have made a huge impact on me and this program as a whole."
