ALFRED, NY – For the second time of the 2023 season, Alfred University men's lacrosse players have swept the Empire 8 Weekly Awards as
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) and
Scott Kimiecik (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) took both honors, as made official in an announcement by Associate Commissioner,
Joe Venniro on Monday.
It's Matson's third recognition this season and Kimiecik's eighth of his career, making him tied for third all-time in AU's history for most E8 Weekly Awards. He is tied with current athlete and track & field athlete,
Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) and
Seth Spicer '18 who was a three-time All-American for the men's track & field team. AU men's lacrosse has now earned six E8 Weekly Awards this season as the most in the program's history and they are now tied with women's track & field with 30 in their overall program history, for third place among Saxon teams.
Matson claimed sole possession of the Alfred University, single-game goals record, as well as the Empire 8 record! Prior to Saturday's win over Russell Sage College, there were three Saxons that had scored nine goals in a single game.
Jay Morris '81,
Peter Colburn '95 and
Jake Lynch '18 all had nine goals in a single game and Lynch did it twice. Since joining the Empire 8, Lynch was the only player that hit nine goals in a single game twice, joining
Harry Hughes of Hartwick College and
Paul Chapman of Houghton University (then Houghton College). On Saturday, Matson scored 10 goals and added two assists. All of his shots on goal found the back of the net as he fired off a total of 14 shots. He was credited with the game-winning goal and had one man-up goal. Matson added three ground balls in the dominant win.
Kimiecik got his second Empire 8 win in a row as he made eight saves in goal and only allowed three scores during the 28-7 win at Russell Sage College on Saturday. He tacked on a ground ball in the win.
Matson was also named a Saxon of the Week on Monday along with women's lacrosse's
Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR). Matson and Kimiecik were joined in the Empire 8 Weekly Awards by another member of AUWLAX as
Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) was named the Goalie of the Week.
