GENESEO, NY — The Alfred University men's lacrosse team lost to the No. 3 ranked SUNY Geneseo Knights in their quarterfinal match up 15-5 on Tuesday afternoon.
"Too many turnovers today. Guys played hard the whole game," Head Coach Jason Lockner said. "We have made the playoffs multiple years in a row. We will work to take the next step. What a great group of seniors on and off the field. Proud of their efforts!"
Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport) was one of those seniors who opened the scoring just 42 seconds into the game, assisted by Keagan Hoesterey (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon). Riley would also score in the second quarter for his second of the game.
Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored the second goal of the game which gave AU the 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Loewke led all scorers with two goals and an assist on a goal by Marcus Darminio (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) in the fourth quarter. Loewke recorded six shots, and three on frame. Those shots made him the new single-season record holder for both shots and shots on goal.
Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling) continued setting records of his own in the face-off circle. He went 16-for-23, which made him the single-season record holder for face-off wins, his fifth school record he's tied or broken this season alone. He also had a game-high 12 ground balls off of his wins.
Alex Petrangelo (Niskyuna, NY/Niksayuna) was kept busy in his postseason debut, making 14 saves across 60 minutes of action. Unfortunately for him and the Saxons, a seven-goal second quarter for SUNY Geneseo was enough to put them through to the semifinal.
Alfred University finishes with an 8-9 record, going 4-5 in Empire 8 play. They will turn their attention to the offseason in preperation of getting over the hump in the spring of 2027.
