Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) added six points and three boards for AU.
"Fisher is a good team," Head Coach
Mike Moskowitz said. "They don't make many mistakes and are tough on both ends for 40 minutes. I was happy with how we handled the press and our half-court defensive execution."
The Saxons set the tone early in the first quarter, as a 3-point shot from
Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) was part of an opening 7-2 run. Consecutive shots from beyond the arc from Flint and
Grace Rittenhouse (Dansville, NY/Dansville) extended AU's lead by as many nine points. The Cardinals ended the first quarter on a 7-2 run, but the Saxons still led by a 15-11 margin.
St. John Fisher gained momentum in the second quarter, taking the lead with a little over six minutes remaining in the half. The Cardinals put together a 14-3 run before going into halftime with a 32-22 advantage.
Harkenrider opened scoring in the second half for the Saxons with a 3-point shot. Both Flint and Stewart scored for Alfred University in the third quarter, but the Saxons trailed 55-31 going into the fourth quarter. Stewart and Harkenrider combined for 12 points in the final quarter, but St. John Fisher hit enough shots to seal the game.
"We'll use the next 36 hours to reset physically and mentally before we continue our path to focusing on improving 1 percent every day," Moskowitz said.
Alfred University will next receive some rest before returning to action on Friday when they travel to Russell Sage College for a 5:30 PM tip-off.
