ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team showcased another first-year student-athlete as Leah Harkenrider (Hornell, NY/Hornell) became the second Saxon to win the Empire 8 Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week award as made official in an announcement by Associate Commissioner, Joe Venniro on Monday.
 
Harkenrider joins Grace Rittenhouse (Dansville, NY/Dansville) as the two Saxons to make the weekly list, with both being Rookies of the Week.
 
Harkenrider had collegiate bests almost in every statistical category, despite a loss at St. John Fisher College. She was 5-of-8 from the 3-point arc and perfect at the free throw line in that game for a total of 17 points. She also had three steals for another collegiate best. Earlier in the week, Harkenrider helped the Saxons almost pull off an upset when they hosted Nazareth College as she scored six points and pulled down two rebounds. Both of her buckets were 3-pointers as 20 of her 22 field goals made this season have been from 3-point land.
 
Harkenrider and the Saxons will next turn their sights on the Empire 8 Tournament as they head to Rochester, NY to face No. 2 seeded, St. John Fisher College on Tuesday, April 6 at 7:00pm.
