ALFRED, NY -- First-year Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) of the Alfred University women's basketball team was named the Empire 8 Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week as made official by Associate Commissioner, Joe Venniro on Monday afternoon.

Ion earned her fifth double-digit scoring game on Saturday as she was 5-for-8 from the floor with one 3-pointer and a 3-for-4 showing at the free throw line for 14 points in a win over SUNY Delhi. She tacked on seven points against the #15 nationally-ranked SUNY Geneseo Knights by going 3-for-5 from the floor with a 3-pointer. Ion had five rebounds and two steals against the Broncos while picking up one assist at Geneseo.

Her and the Saxons will next compete in the holiday break tournament at Western Connecticut University. They face Elms College on Sunday, December 29 at 5 p.m. Teammate Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT/Ithaca) was named a Saxon of the Week on Monday as well.
