ALFRED, NY—Sophomore Christopher Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) has been named Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in goal against Nazareth College.
 
Gutierrez earned his fourth shutout of the season when he and the Saxons topped Empire 8 foe, Nazareth College on Saturday on the road. Nazareth fired off 13 shots on Saturday, making it the second most shots that Gutierrez has faced this season. Out of those shots, nine were on target and Gutierrez stopped all of them for a season-high in saves. The mark also topped his previous collegiate career-high of eight saves set against Buffalo State last year in mid-October. The win brings him to a record of 4-0-1 on the season.
 
Gutierrez and the Saxons return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Fredonia, NY to take on non-conference opponent SUNY Fredonia.
