GENESEO, NY — The Alfred University men's soccer team fell to SUNY Geneseo in 2-1 fashion on Wednesday afternoon at College Stadium.
The Saxons' (6-3-2, 4-2-2 Empire 8) defense was tested early, as senior goalkeeper
Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) turned aside a long-range shot and recorded two additional saves in the opening 15 minutes. The first scoring opportunity for Alfred University came on a second-chance attempt by
Dennis Hayes V (Ferndale, MI/Berkley), but the shot was saved by the Geneseo (9-4-1, 6-2 Empire 8) goalkeeper.
In the 31st minute,
Kiernan McManus (Penfield, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) connected with
Landon Berry (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy), who found the back of the net to give the Saxons a 1-0 lead. The goal for Berry marked the first of his collegiate career with Alfred University. Geneseo responded two minutes later with an equalizer, sending the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.
Berry opened the second half with a shot attempt in the first minute of play as Alfred looked to regain the lead. The Knights broke the tie in the 73rd minute with a contested shot to take a 2-1 advantage. The Saxons continued to search for an equalizer, but a shot by
Griff Schillmoeller (Waverly, NY/Waverly) in the 78th minute sailed over the crossbar. Alfred earned a corner kick in the closing minutes but was unable to convert, as Geneseo held on for the victory.
Alfred University will remain on the road to face Keuka College on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
