ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against SUNY Brockport on Wednesday night.
A quiet opening 20 minutes was quickly disrupted by a long throw from
AJ Giaquinto (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake). His toss into the 18-yard box found the head of
Xavier Bowman (Hampstead, MD/Manchester Valley), who hit the crossbar. But the rebound bounced perfectly for
Juanjo Menendez Gutierrez (Villanueva Cañada, Madrid, Spain/Woodstock Academy) to head in for the advantage.
AU battled with a strong defensive game, under pressure for most of the game. The Saxons recorded four shots, while
Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) saved four shots in the first half. He had another stop in the second half.
But a goal in the final minute of play for the Golden Eagles (4-3-2, 3-0-1 Empire 8) brought back a point for the visitors. A late corner by
Niko Lampros Mendoza (Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge) just missed being converted on, leaving the two teams to settle for a point.
Alfred University (4-2-2, 2-1-2 Empire 8) will next host SUNY Poly on Saturday at 1:00 PM at Yunevich Stadium.
