ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University men's soccer team took home a 2-1 win over SUNY Poly at Yunevich Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
AU (5-2-2, 3-1-2 Empire 8) now has three straight games with at least a point and held their opponents to just two goals in that stretch.
"We didn't have great stuff today but we worked really hard and were able to battle," Head Coach
Garret Eldridge said. "We will have a growth mindset and keep working to get better."
The Saxons did get off to a great start by scoring the opener just 12 minutes in. A long cross from
Jesus De La Torre (Malaga, Spain/The Woodstock Academy) would find the head of
Xavier Bowman (Hampstead, MD/Manchester Valley). He was able to direct into the top left corner, strong enough against the hand of the Wildcats' netminder to get in the net.
AU continued directing one-way traffic into the Poly half, as they had six shots directed towards goal, while only facing two Wildcats chances that weren't on frame. But Poly did manage to get on the board with a penalty kick early in the second half.
The Saxons continued to battle in the second 45, looking to get ahead.
Tyler Mulholland (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) did his part in net to hold off the visitors despite only making one save all match.
But it would be in the 77th minute where Alfred University came through. A free kick by
Lawrence John Taylor (Bong County, Liberia/Westminster School) got through to De La Torre, who scored after his initial shot was stopped to seal the victory for the Saxons.
AU will next celebrate its seniors against Hartwick College on Saturday, October 10 at 4:00 p.m.
