ALFRED, NY -- Alfred University face-off specialist
Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling) was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III Team of the Week for March 2 on Wednesday.
The senior is the first player since
Garrette Briggs '21 to be named to the USILA Team of the Week, back when he was named to it on April 16, 2019. He is the first player since
Kevin Matson '25 to be nationally recognized by the USILA when he was a Division III All-American Honorable Mention on May 24, 2023.
Cupp was sensational in two road wins for Alfred University last week, winning 43-of-51 face-offs (84.3 percent) and grabbing 31 ground balls. He went 23-for-25 on draws with 12 grounders against Alfred State, then was 20-for-26 on draws while picking up 19 ground balls on Saturday at SUNY Morrisville. His 19 ground balls made him the new record holder for most ground balls in a career. He broke the record set by
Garrette Briggs '21 with 463. Cupp's ground ball efforts this week saw him surpass Briggs with 466 and counting in his senior season.
Players earned recognition from the organization as they each posted exceptional performances in their programs games this past week.
Cupp was named as the Empire 8 Co-Defensive Player of the Week alongside
Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) who was named as the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week. Cupp was also recognized as the Saxon of the Week alongside Hunt Seat Rider
Lily Coats (New Boston, NH/Goffstown).
