ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University men's lacrosse team earned a huge first win of the season against cross-street rivals Alfred State. The purple and gold took it to the blue and yellow in a 25-7 final at Pioneer Stadium.
"The guys did a great job playing unselfish offense looking for the one more and getting the assist," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "Our face-off unit was exceptional. Great to see Dressler, Meier, and Brady get their first collegiate goals! Moving onto Morrisville now!"
Stephan Meier (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) scored the third goal of the game after
Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored the opening two goals in the first 2:30 of the game. Loewke led all Saxon scorers with nine points.
Mason Dressler (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove Area) scored the game's 10th goal while
Jack Brady (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) scored the game's final goal late in the fourth.
The aforementioned Loewke found the twine five times, while
Drew Smith (Walworth, NY/Ruben A. Cirillo) also did the same. 12 different Saxons found the back of the net with four recording multi-goal games. Dressler finished with two tallies along with
Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport).
Nick Volpe (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) scored four times for AU as well.
In the crease, both
Max Sigmund (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) and
Alex Petrangelo (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) split time. Neither were kept too busy, making seven and six saves respectively.
The three-person face-off unit of
Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling),
Rhett Krieger (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) and
Jacob Smith (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) were also very successful. Cupp went 23-for-25 while adding on a goal and assist from his face-off wins. Both Krieger and Smith were perfect at the face-off dot going 8-for-8 and 2-for-2 respectively.
Other goal scorers on the evening included
Sam Crosby (Auburn, NY/Auburn),
Michael Gruin (Hamburg, NY/Orchard Park),
Keagan Hoesterey (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon), and
Christian Moon (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa).
Marcus Darminio (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus),
Colin Kinsley (Walden, NY/Valley Central), and
Tyler Muskopf (Elma, NY/Iroquois) also added on assists in the high-scoring team affair.
Alfred University (1-1) will look to keep building off its great rivalry win on the road against SUNY Morrisville on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
