WILLIAMSPORT, PA -- The Alfred University men's lacrosse team started its season on the road against the Penn College Wildcats. In a tough non-conference match up, the undefeated Wildcats improved to a 3-0 record with a 13-10 win.
"Tough loss to a good team," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. " We need to shoot better and their goalie played exceptional.
Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverligng) and our face-off units played great.
Ben Cunningham (Dover, MD/The Gunston School) played great defense and
Max Sigmund (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) played well in goal. Happy for
Colin Kinsley (Walden, NY/Valley Central) getting his first collegiate goal. We know what we have to work on and we will get after it."
AU jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to early goals from
Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and
Sam Crosby (Auburn, NY/Auburn), with
Keagan Hoesterey (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Maceon) getting the assist on the Crosby goal. Hoesterey ended with three assists in the first half. He also dished one off to
Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) who led the Saxons in scoring with three points and 16 shots with 12 on goal. It made up part of 50 shots overall by the Saxons with 34 on net.
Cupp won 17 of his 23 face-offs with
Rhett Krieger (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) winning his first collegiate face-off as well. They combined to win 18 of the 26 face-offs. In the crease, Sigmund made 10 stops in the loss. Along with Kinsley's first career goal,
Drew Smith (Walworth, NY/Ruben A. Cirillo) notched a goal to kick-start four straight goals in the second quarter to extend the lead to 8-4.
Crosby also tallied a multi-goal game alongside
Nick Volpe (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) who scored the first man-up goal of the season for Alfred University. Volpe's man-up goal was the second of the game and stopped a skid where AU let in five straight goals to make it 9-all late in the third quarter. However, two late goals in the third and two early goals in the fourth were enough for Penn College to pull away with the win.
Alfred University will continue action on the road right across the street against Alfred State in the next round of the Alfred Cup on Wednesday at 4PM.
