Bremel Throws Program's Fifth Best Weight Throw Mark to Win at Houghton Last Chance

HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University women's track & field team competed at the Houghton Last Chance Conference Qualifier on Saturday afternoon.

The Saxons were led by Meridian Bremel (Reading, VT/Woodstock Union) as she won the weight throw with a personal best and program fifth best throw of 14.51m (47'07.25"). Her throw passed the then-school record throw of 14.07m (46'-2") set in 2017 by Brynn Hyde '18. Bremel qualified for finals with the top prelim throw of 13.45m (44'-1.5") on her first throw and then threw her top mark on her fifth attempt and was the only thrower out of the 16-athlete field to break the 14m plane. Natalya Ryckman (New Eagle, PA/Ringgold) and Shansanique Pollack (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) both joined Bremel in the finals. Ryckman took fourth with a throw of 13.05m (42'-9.75") while Pollack claimed ninth with a toss of 10.63m (34'-10.5").

Ryckman led the rest of the throwers in the shot put, throwing a mark of 9.68m (31'-9.25") for third place. Taliyah Mitchell (Groton, CT/Fitch) led the jumps side of the field events with a second place finish in the long jump, marking a spot of 4.50m (14'-9.25") on her first attempt. Daria Melnychuk (Vinnytsia, Ukraine/Podillia Scientific and Technical Lyceum for Gifted Youth/The Principia) followed the jumps with her fifth place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.15m (3'-9.25").

"Great day today. Happy with what this team has been able to accomplish this season, especially being as young as they are," Head Coach Matt Phillips '10 said. "We now look forward to entering the championship season with the athletes who have qualified for Empire 8 and The All-Atlantic Regionals."

On the track, Vladyslava Makarenko (Berdychiv, Ukraine/Lyceum 23) led a 5-6-7 finish in the mile with a time of 6:03.69. She was followed by Sydney Ribble (Addison, NY/Addison) and Nyah Allen (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) as Ribble ran a 6:11.39 and Allen clocked a 6:22.01. Allen also took sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.74 and Ribble added a ninth place finish in the 800-meter run, running a 2:46.11.
