ROCHESTER, NY— The Alfred University women's track & field team traveled to St. John Fisher University for the St. John Fisher Cardinal Classic on Saturday, April 26.
The Saxons had many impressive finishes and some personal bests were achieved. Anne Spila (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) was the first of the team to step onto the track. She raced in heat three of the 100-meter hurdles and was first to cross the finish line in 15.78 seconds. The time put Spila in fifth place after the first round and qualified her for the finals. Later in the meet, she ran a 16.28 second race in the finals to achieve seventh.
Spila also competed in the javelin throw, scoring the 10th furthest mark with a 29.92m (98'-2") throw. Meridian Bremel (Reading, VT/Woodstock Union) accompanied Spila on the runway. Her best mark measured in at 19.67m (64'-6"), to take 29th place in the event.
In the 1500-meter run, McKenzie Hall (Hornell, NY/Hornell) placed third in heat four of the event. She ran a time of 5:06.72 to rank 31st out of the 86 competitors.
Alivia Kocan (Hornell, NY/Arkport Central) claimed a personal best in the 800-meter run. She finished first in heat six with a time of 2:39.43.
Another personal best for the Saxons was by Octavia Fred (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) in the 200-meter dash. She placed second in heat eight with 29.36 seconds on the clock. Earlier in the meet, Fred ran the 400-meter dash and registered a time of 1:09.66.
Annabelle Townsend (Woodsville, NH/Woodsville) placed third in heat three of the 400-meter hurdles. With a time of 1:09.80, she took 15th out of 32 athletes.
"Despite the weather, we had a good showing one week out from Empire 8s," Head Coach Matt Phillips '10 said. "Today's focus wasn't about the results but about preparing mentally for our championship meet. From what I saw today, we're excited for what the squad can do at Brockport."
"The mental toughness that was shown today proves to me that next week at the championship, we are going to do great things," Assistant Head Coach Sierra Wilson '22 remarked. "I am proud of this team for what they have accomplished so far, their hard work is showing."
The next competition for the Saxons is the Empire 8 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by SUNY Brockport on May 2-3.
