UTICA, NY - The Alfred University women's track & field team returned to Utica University on Friday for day one of the Indoor Empire 8 Championships.
Anne Spila (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) smashed her previous school record in the pentathlon of 3024 points set just earlier this month, with a new score of 3191 points. She achieved a season-best height in the high jump and a personal best time in the 800-meter run, leading her to a fourth place finish overall in the event. She cleared 1.52m (4'-11.75") in the high jump and ran a 2:34.50 in the 800 to score over 600 points in each of the events. Her top-scoring event was the 60-meter hurdles, as she scored 822 points with her time of 9.43.
Spila competed in the open 60-meter hurdles and finished second in her heat pushing her through to the finals for Saturday with a time of 9.48. She will enter the finals as the No. 4 seed.
The women's distance medley relay team took a podium finish of seventh place with a time of 13:49.12.
Alivia Kocan (Hornell, NY/Arkport Central) started the race with the1,200-meter leg, followed by
Zoe Rainville (Saranac, NY/Saranac) in the 400-meter dash,
Annabelle Townsend (Woodsville, NH/Woodsville) in the 800-meter and
McKenzie Hall (Hornell, NY/Hornell) closing out with the mile.
Hall put up an impressive race in the open mile, finishing at a time of 5:28.18. Rainville competed in the open 60-meter dash with a great outcome of 8.49 seconds.

Alfred University sits tied with Houghton University at the end of Day One with seven team points, ahead of Hartwick College and Russell Sage College. The Saxons will next conclude the Empire 8 Championships on Saturday.
