Saxons Place Fifth At Allegheny Empire Championships

WEBSTER, NY – The Alfred University women's swimming & diving team finished in fifth overall at the Allegheny Empire Championships at the Webster Aquatic Center over the weekend. The Saxons also finished third place in the Empire 8 with 509 points total.

"We performed pretty well this weekend. Packing a whole season's expectations into a meet at the end of a season is pretty emotional." Head Coach Brian Striker said. "The women swam awesome! I was thrilled for them, they had so many great swims, they worked very hard this season and are a tough group.  As an underdog, they were able to put up a good fight over the course of the four days.  I am proud of what we were able to get done this season!"

The 400-freestyle relay team of Kamila Roman (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck), Sarah Anderson (Wayne, PA/Radnor), Maureen Derry (Asheville, NC/Asheville), and Mia Spencer (Omaha, NE/Omaha Central) finished in sixth place with a time of 3:48.53.

Maureen Derry qualified for A-finals in the 200-yard backstroke and finished ninth with a time of 2:20.86. Mariam Kiragu (Gaborone, Botswana/Legae Academy) and Sarah Stolpinski (Watkins Glen, NY/Watkins Glen) both also qualified for B-finals in the 200-yard backstroke.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Sarah Anderson qualified for A-finals and finished in third overall and second among Empire 8 competitors with a time of 55.32. This earned her an All-Empire 8 Second Team recognition.

Gaia McCune (Pittsburgh, PA Moon Area) also qualified for B-finals in the 100-yard freestyle.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Mia Spencer and Liv Richeda (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) both qualified for A-finals. Spencer placed fifth overall with a time of 2:34.14, while Richeda placed ninth with a time of 2:42.12.

Erika Purdy (Syracuse, NY/Cicero North) and Anna Muscatiello (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) were both able to qualify for B-finals in the 200-breaststroke.

Kamila Roman qualified for A-finals and placed ninth with a time of 2:31.18. Macie Francisco (Vestal, NY/Vestal) also qualified for B-finals in the event.

"This is a great group and more than anything, they support each other and have worked together to try to improve themselves and this program over this season." Head Coach Brian Striker said.
