ALFRED, NY – Alfred University's
Carlos Gonzalez (Baja California, Mexico/Unifront) was named one of the Empire 8 Men's Swimming & Diving Co-Athletes of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Monday's announcement is the fourth time for the first-year to be named to the weekly E8 listing and is his first Co-Athlete of the Week selection. Since joining the Empire 8, Gonzalez is the first men's swimming & diving athlete to earn four weekly honors in a single season and is now tied with
William LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne),
Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/Saint Andrew's) and
Matt Baker '09 for the most weekly honors in a career.
Gonzalez played a vital role in the Saxons' fourth place finish in the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational over the weekend. He had AU's lone victory as he won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:03.93, defeating the rest of the finals group by almost three whole seconds while also breaking the previous Alfred University school record of 4:10.00, set in 2013 by
Zac Toth '15. He also garnered a second place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:04.55. Gonzalez helped the Saxons earn four Top-10 relay finishes. The highlight was the 200-yard medley relay that posted a combined time of 1:35.12, teaming with LaMastus, Terrazas and
Emmanuel Drappatz (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area). Gonzalez teamed with Saxons for a seventh place finish in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:30.32 and two eighth place finishes, first with the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:13.33) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:13.81). Through his efforts and his teammates', the Saxons defeated Middlebury College, Vassar College, Nazareth University and Union College. Gonzalez was named a Saxon of the Week for his efforts.
Gonzalez was also named a Saxon of the Week on Monday alongside women's track & field's
Anne Spila (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity).
