ITHACA, NY -- Alfred University's men's swimming & diving program found lots of success in its three-day performance at the Ithaca Invitational.
"The swimmers and divers performed great," head coach Brian Striker '00 said. "We had a solid amount of PR's. I was really happy with the results. There were too many great performances to single out a few."
One performance that certainly does deserve to be singled out is Carlos Gonzalez (Baja California, Mexico/Unifront). His historic freshman season continues, as he shattered the school record in the 400-yard individual medley. The previous record of 4:10.00 set by Zac Toth in 2013 was beaten by over six seconds, with Gonzalez's time coming in at 4:03.93 as he won the finals event. Gonzalez also just missed the top step in the 200-yard breaststroke finals with a time of 2:04.55.Â
Several other swimmers also had good individual races and results. William LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne) finished fourth in the 200-yard IM finals at 1:58.42, fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a 51.50, and sixth in the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:56.70. His brother Wade LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne) came home ninth overall and first in the B-final in the 100-yard breaststroke at 59.01. Fernando Lagos' (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) one individual top-10 result was in the 200-yard butterfly, wrapping up a 2:00.62.
Another racer who stood out was Paul Tuttle (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit), who was eighth overall in the 100-yard backstroke with a 52.40. Finally, Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/Saint Andrew's)Â had two individual results which stood out too. Those came in the 200-yard IM, where he was fifth with a 1:59.63, and just cracking into the top 10 in the 100-yard breaststroke at 59.60.
The Saxons also placed highly in several relays across the entire weekend. They finished fifth in the 200-yard medley with a 1:35.12 consisting of Will LaMastus, Gonzalez, Terrazas, and Emmanuel Drappatz (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area). A seventh-place relay finish in the 400-yard medley clocking in at 3:30.32 consisted of three of the four members, with Lagos replacing Terrazas. They also were at least top 10 in five other relays throughout the weekend made up various members including Keagen Winkky (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), Alexander Villegas (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), and Sean Killian (Kenmore, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate Institution).
Up next for Alfred University is a nice long break for the winter holiday. They'll return home for the first of three home meets on January 10 against Nazareth University.
