BRADFORD, PA -- Alfred University's Women's Swimming and Diving team showed out in a big 137-38 win over the Pitt-Bradford Panthers, winning all but two races.
"Usually on the road in mid-November, I have certain expectations on the results we would see at an away meet. We have had mixed results at Bradford over the years; I was very impressed with how well we swam today," Head Coach Brian Striker '00 said. "We had some great finishes and some solid races. It is great to head home knowing that some of the things we are working on in practices are yielding results. We plan to put in some more work over the next couple weeks as we prepare for the Ithaca invitational in December."
Sarah Anderson (Wayne, PA/Radnor) was again the highlight in the pool for the Saxons, as she broke Pitt-Bradford's pool record in the 50-yard Freestyle with a 25.05. She also wrapped up first two other events, the 100 Backstroke (1:06.28) and with the winning group in the 200-yard Medley Relay (1:59.07).
Mariam Kiragu (Gabarone, Botswana/Legae Academy) also was part of the medley relay, and took home a close win in the 200-yard Freestyle with a 2:14.45 - just .11 seconds over second place. Isobel Anderegg (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsoro Area) also was on the medley relay squad, and took home two second place finishes in the 200 IM (2:29.27) and in the 500-yard Freestyle (6:01.68).
Maureen Derry (Asheville, NC/Asheville) not only won in the relay, but also took gold in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:16.47. She also was just behind Anderson in the 50-yard Freestyle in second place with a 26.87.
Five other Saxons swimmers took home first place in the meet. Liv Richeda (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) took home two of them, in the 1000-yard Freestyle and in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay, clocking in times of 13:11.72 and 1:56.76 respectively. She was joined on the relay team by Lauren Mott (Cortland, NY/Cortland), Alexandra Simmons (Danbury, CT/Danbury), and Shelby Baker (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo).
Simmons also would win the 500 Freestyle race with a time of 5:57.45, and third in the 50 Freestyle at 27.40, completing a Saxon sweep at the podium in that event. Eden Vallely (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) also brought home the win as the lone competitor in the 100-yard Butterfly with a 1:15.17.
