ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University women's track & field team continued its indoor season at the Rochester Institute of Technology January Invitational on Friday evening.
Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne) earned her second indoor school record as she won the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:05.89. Her time beat the rest of the field, including runners from Division I St. Bonaventure University, Division II Daemen College and soon-to-be Empire 8 competitors, SUNY Brockport. She bested the field by almost a complete six seconds or more. Gilbert's new career-best time replaced the time of 3:06.55, set in 2003 by
Millicent Boadi '03.
Gilbert ended her day by teaming with
Anne Spila (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity), Annabelle Townsend (Woodsville, NH/Woodsville) and
Bianca Durso (Utica, NY/New Hartford Senior) in the 4x400-meter relay, finishing just shy of second place with a time of 4:24.94.
Spila had a standout evening as she picked up the win in the long jump with a season-best distance of 5.19m (17'-0.5") and an indoor season personal best mark as well. She earned the win on her second attempt while hitting a mark just 0.01m shorter in the finals on her second attempt, having to skip her final attempt due to the 4x400-meter relay. Earlier in the evening, Spila took second in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.47m (4'-9.75") on her first attempt.
Durso followed Spila in both field events as she claimed fifth in both showings. She cleared 1.42m (4'-7.75") in the high jump and reached 4.85m (15'-11") in the long jump. Townsend also earned a Top-10 finish in the high jump with a height of 1.37m (4'-6") for ninth place.
Townsend finished 10
th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 11.37, just ahead of teammate,
Natalya Ryckman (New Eagle, PA/Ringgold) and her 11
th place finishing time of 11.44.
Zoe Rainville (Saranac, NY/Saranac) had the next best finish on the track, following Gilbert's school record win. She ran a time of 8.50 in both the prelims and finals of the 60-meter dash to be seeded third and to finish third overall. She then added two fifth place finishes on the day with a time of 28.35, qualifying for the Empire 8 Conference Championships in the 200-meter dash and a time of 45.61 in the 300-meter dash. Her 60 and 200 times were both personal bests.
Catherine Padilla (Yonkers, NY/Saunders Trades and Technical) added a seventh place finish in the 300-meters with a time of 54.19.
McKenzie Hall (Hornell, NY/Hornell) ran in the 3,000-meter run to take seventh place with a time of 11:32.41 with
Mari Jablonski (Monticello, GA/Jasper County) just missing Top-10 in 11
th place with a time of 12:35.46. Jablonski did get a Top-10 finish as she opened the meet with a ninth place finish in the 5,000-meter run, clocking in an Empire 8 Championship qualifying time of 21:05.68.
The Saxons will next look toward a two-day meet at SUNY Brockport with the Saxons competing in the pentathlon starting on Friday, February 2 and the rest of the team on Saturday, February 3.
