ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's swimming & diving team fell to Ithaca College by a score of 238-53 on Saturday, January 27th.
The Saxons (2-6, 0-2 Empire 8) celebrated three seniors final home meets this weekend with a ceremony before the meet. The three seniors, who are all four year members of the swim & dive program, were Macie Francisco (Vestal, NY/Vestal), Erika Purdy (Syracuse, NY/Cicero North), and Mia Spencer (Omaha, NE/Omaha Central).
"Ithaca is a very strong program and I thought we did well in many events." Head Coach Brian Striker said. "Being towards the end of our season, it was fun to do 50's of the strokes, which are not typically in a meet lineup. The swimmers really enjoyed doing something a bit different. Our divers continue to fine tune and tried some new things. We continue to look stronger as we come out of the heavy training that we were doing over the past few weeks and are really excited to continue resting and tapering for our championship."
The first points of the day were claimed by a third place finish in the 200-yard medley relay by Kamila Roman (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck), Sarah Anderson (Wayne, PA/Radnor), Mariam Kiragu (Gaborone, Botswana/Legae Academy), and Mia Spencer, with a time of 1:58.41.
Kamila Roman finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.83. She also won the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 27.80.
Sarah Anderson finished third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.05 and placed third in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:07.93.
Maureen Derry (Asheville, NC/Asheville) claimed second place in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:16.77.
The last individual points of the day were claimed by Alexandra Simmons (Danbury, CT Danbury) and Eden Vallely (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) as they finished back to back in 4th and 5th in the 200-yard Individual Medley.
The Saxons will next compete at the Empire 8 Championships in Webster, New York on February 14-17th.
