Men's Swimming & Diving Battles Ithaca on Senior Day

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team fell to Ithaca College by a score of 174-118 on Saturday, January 27th.

The Saxons (4-4, 1-1 Empire 8) celebrated six seniors final home meets this weekend with a ceremony before the meet. The six seniors they celebrated were Aidan Kirk (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), Fernando Lagos (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln), Alessandro Lagos Canales (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln), Nathan Sponenberg (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia), Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/Saint Andrew's), and Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington).

"Ithaca is a very strong program and I thought we did well in many events." Head Coach Brian Striker said. "Being towards the end of our season, it was fun to do 50's of the strokes, which are not typically in a meet lineup. The swimmers really enjoyed doing something a bit different. Our divers continue to fine tune and try some new things. We continue to look stronger as we come out of the heavy training that we were doing over the past few weeks and are really excited to continue resting and tapering for our championship."

The 200-yard medley relay team of William LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne), Wade LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne), Colby Watkins (New Orleans, LA St. Martin's Episcopal) and Emmanuel Drappatz (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area) claimed the first win of the day with a time of 1:37.10.

Will LaMastus and Paul Tuttle (Irondequoit, NY Irondequoit) finished first and second in the 50-yard backstroke. They again finished back to back in the 100-yard backstroke in second and third.

Emiliano Terrazas finished second in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 28.03.

Emmanuel Drappatz finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.17.

Colby Watkins claimed a second place finish in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 23.78.

In the final individual race of the day, Will LaMastus won the 200-yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:01.76, inching out second place by a mere 0.18 of a second.

The Saxons will next compete at the Empire 8 Championships in Webster, New York on February 14-17th.
