ALFRED, NY – Anne Spila (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) of Alfred University was named the Empire 8 Women's Field Athlete of the Week on Monday in an official announcement by Associate Commissioner, Joe Venniro.
Spila competed in three events and broke three personal records at the Geneseo Early Season Invitational on Monday. Her top finish was in the long jump as she nearly broke an Alfred University school record. That record is held by Alfred University legend, one of four National Champions and the only woman National Champion, Val Thompson '84. Thompson, albeit a champion in the 100-meter hurdles, holds the record at 5.49m (18'-0.25"). On Monday, Spila jumped 5.44m (17'-10.25"), just inches short of one of the oldest records on AU's board. She finished second at the meet in the event.
Spila also competed on the track, setting new personal bests in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. She ran a 13.15 in the 100 for 18th and a 28.22 in the 200 for 25th.
Spila was joined in the Empire 8 Weekly Awards by fellow Saxon Scott Kimiecik (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) who was named Empire 8 Men's Lacrosse Goalie of the Week.
She and the Saxons will next compete at the Messiah Invite on Thursday, April 13th.
