BROCKPORT, NY – The Alfred University women's track & field team competed in the pentathlon at the SUNY Brockport Invitational on Friday evening.
The Alfred University Women's track & field team got the SUNY Brockport Invitational off to a strong start with personal bests being set in the pentathlon by all four women who competed.
Alfred's top pentathlon finish was from Anne Spila (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity), recording a personal best 2655 points. Bianca Durso (Utica, NY/New Hartford Senior) was right behind with a personal best score of 2590 points. The PR's from both women qualified them for the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference Indoor Championships (AARTFC) and the Empire 8 Indoor Track and Field Championships (E8).
The lady Saxons weren't finished with PR's yet though! Both Annabelle Townsend (Woodsville, NH/Woodsville) with 2129 points and Natalya Ryckman (New Eagle, PA/Ringgold) with 1858 points, set personal bests as well. They will join their fellow Saxons in the Empire 8 Indoor Track and Field Championships as their scores earned them a spot.
For individual events, the Saxons had even more personal bests to add on to the stellar day. Ryckman had three personal bests in individual events with scores of 412 points/11.80 in the 60-meter hurdles, 352 points/4.19-meters in long jump, and 313 points with a time of 3:05.83 in the 800-meters. Spila added two more personal bests to the Saxons tally with scores of 655 points/1.53-meters in high jump and 500 points with a time of 2:46.60 in the 800-meters. Townsend also had two personal bests with scores of 436 points/4.53-meters in long jump and 560 points with a time of 2:41.17 in the 800-meters.
"Absolutely amazing day for the four Lady Saxons who competed today!!!!!!" Interim Head Coach Matt Phillips '10 said. "Countless personal bests, and great energy. These ladies have been working hard and putting in work for months now. Today it came together and the results speak for themselves."
Spila had the top event finish as she cleared 1.53-meters in the high jump to finish second.
The Saxons will return to action for the rest of the events at the SUNY Brockport Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, February 4th.
