4x800 Relay and Morrow Score in Day One of E8 Championships; Chu, Peters Qualify for Finals

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men's track & field team sits in sixth place out of seven teams competing in the Empire 8 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Nazareth College on Friday evening.

Steven Morrow (Dryden, NY/Dryden) scored the bulk of the points on Friday as he was just one position out from earning All-Conference, finishing third in the 400-meter dash. He ran a 51.63 lap to earn the Saxons six of their eight points. Noam Sokolovsky (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) was 0.07 seconds away from earning a podium spot in the 400, running a 52.70 to finish in seventh place.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Kyle Jenkins (Marcellus, NY/West Genesee), Chris Mayo (Wolcott, NY/North Rose-Wolcott), George Mecca (Derby, NY/Eden) and Yuner Sesmas (Apollo, PA/Kiski Area) combined for a time of 8:47.08 to take fifth place. The team earned the remaining two points for the Saxons.

Aiden Chu (Beltsville, MD/Hauppauge) qualified for two finals Friday night, set to compete in the deciding races on Saturday. First, he ran an All-Atlantic time of 15.36 in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing fourth in the prelims. Then, him and Neil Peters (The Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) qualified for Saturday's finals in the 100-meter dash. Peters will be the higher seed in Saturday's race as he was third in the qualifiers, running an 11.17. Chu ran the fifth-fastest time of 11.26.

John Wendt (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) missed qualifying for finals by 0.03 seconds as he finished ninth on Friday in the 100-meter dash.

"We're really excited for the opportunity that is in front of us," Head Coach Dr. Angie Taylor said. "There are only a handful of points that we need to gain in order to vault ourselves up the leaderboard and we're now in a situation for that to happen. We're happy of the points that the 4x800 and Steven earned today and there is a lot of track & field competition to be had tomorrow!"

Day Two of the Empire 8 Outdoor Track & Field Championships will begin with field events starting at 11:00am on Saturday.
