ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University women's track & field team posted multiple Top-10 performances during the St. John Fisher Cardinal Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) and
Madison Palmer (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) both won individual events on Saturday. "It was very exciting to not only see Ana and Madison win those events, but seeing so many of our women have strong performances was fantastic," Head Coach
Dr. Angie Taylor said. "We got to see a lot of great competition, especially within the Empire 8. When we look at what we accomplished today, we are even more excited for the conference championships."
Ion won the triple jump with a distance of 10.94m on Saturday as Palmer added another field event win, throwing 11.36m in the shot put to capture the gold in that event. Palmer added three more Top-10 placings in the throwing events. She placed third in the hammer throw with a distance of 39.31m. Palmer finished sixth overall and fifth amongst collegiate competitors in the javelin, marking 22.78m. She rounded out her performance with a ninth place finish in the discus, recording a distance of 29.41m.
Ion joined
Bianca Durso (Utica, NY/New Hartford Senior) to finish strong in the high jump. They both cleared 1.45m on Saturday but Durso finished fourth due to having one more fault compared to the third place finisher. Ion tied for seventh place.
Sara Badeau (Canaseraga, NY/Canaseraga Central) finished 10
th amongst college athletes at 1.35m in the high jump as well. Durso added another Top-10 finish in the long jump with a distance of 4.88m.
The Saxons had enough sprinters to put together two 4x100-meter relay teams. The 'A' team of
Ashley Page (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), Badeau,
Anne Spila (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) and Durso finished fourth with a time of 54.40.
Megan Jones (Far Rockaway, NY/White Plains), Olivia Chamberlin (Holland, NY/Holland), Kathleen Matthies (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and
Amanda Szatanek (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) finished fifth in 1:02.71.
AU posted another strong relay finish as the 4x400-meter relay team of Page,
Morgan Brothers (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia),
Sarah Lutkins (Union Springs, NY/Union Springs) and
Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) took fifth with a time of 4:37.97.
Both Page and
McKenzie Hall (Hornell, NY/Hornell) had fifth place finishes in individual events as Page ran a 1:11.11 in the 400-meter hurdles and Hall ran a 5:08.89 in the 1,500-meter run.
Other Top-10 finishers for the Saxons were
Mari Jablonski (Monticello, GA/Jasper County) with her eighth place finish in the 10,000-meter run (42.40.34),
Ivy Vallely (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) in the 5,000-meter run (20:32.62) and Gilbert in the 800-meter run (2:32.23) to close out Saturday's invitational.
The Saxons will next compete in one final meet before the Empire 8 Outdoor Championships as they travel back to Rochester to compete at the University of Rochester on Saturday, April 30.
