ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men's track & field team competed at the St. John Fisher College Cardinal Classic on Saturday afternoon in preparations to close out the regular outdoor season.
The Saxons had four 4x400-meter relay teams on Saturday as the team of
George Mecca (Derby, NY/Eden), Chris Mayo (Wolcott, NY/North Rose-Wolcott), Jackson Trimboli (Arkport, NY/Arkport Central) and
Steven Morrow (Dryden, NY/Dryden) won the event with a time of 3:33.59. "We had so many good performances on the track as well as in the field," Head Coach
Dr. Angie Taylor said. "We're really solidifying who we are as a team and within the Empire 8 as everyone has been working hard. The atmosphere on the team is so positive and I think the results speak volumes."
The relays continued to impress as both the 'A' and 'B' teams in the 4x100-meter had strong finishes. The 'A' team of
John Wendt (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter), Steven Jackson (Culpeper, VA/Eastern View), Papa Dioum (New York, NY/Frederick Douglas Academy) and
Neil Peters (The Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) finished third with a time of 43.85. The 'B' team of
Reign Peterson (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY/Hastings), Noam Sokolovsky (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme), Kalum Holbrook (Atlanta, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) and
Preston Guynup (Massena, NY/Massena Central) ran a 46.60 for seventh place.
The entire 'A' team from the 4x100 all made the finals in the 100-meter dash as Peters finished second with an 11.06, Jackson was third with an 11.19, Dioum ran an 11.42 for sixth place and Wendt finished seventh with an 11.46.
There were two throwers who had Top-10 finishes as both
Kenneth Berlin (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) and
Andrew Parnapy (Byron, NY/Byron-Bergen) finished sixth in their respective events. Berlin threw 38.33m in the javelin and Parnapy tossed 35.70m in the discus.
Morrow finished seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.29 as the next top finisher for AU. Mecca had a pair of eight place finishes as he ran a 1:00.85 in the 400-meter hurdles and a 52.49 in the 400-meter dash. Mayo and
Connor Kerr (Tioga, PA/Williamson) followed Mecca in the 400 as they finished 13
th and 14
th, respectively with times of 53.87 and 54.47.
The 200-meter dash was closely contested as Wendt finished eighth with a 23.52, just ahead of Dioum in ninth with a time of 23.54. Sokolovsky and Peterson finished 11
th and 14
th. Sokolovsky ran a 23.85 and Peterson ran a 23.88.
The Saxons will next compete in one final meet before the Empire 8 Outdoor Championships as they travel back to Rochester to compete at the University of Rochester on Saturday, April 30.
