UTICA, NY – The Alfred University men's track & field team completed day one of the Empire 8 Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday evening in sixth place out of the seven teams competing.
The distance medley relay team of
Kyle Jenkins (Marcellus, NY/West Genesee), Chris Mayo (Wolcott, NY/North Rose-Wolcott), Grant Baldwin (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and
Tim Mayo (Wolcott, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) scored four out of the six team points as they ran a time of 11:20.73, defeating Houghton College, Hartwick College and Russell Sage College.
"We're proud of the performance of our DMR team as they had a strong start and a great finish to take fourth place," Head Coach
Dr. Angie Taylor said. "Steven had a great 400 race and we're also very excited to see what Neil can do in tomorrow's final of the 60-meter dash. Overall, we should see a lot of great events tomorrow."
Steven Morrow (Dryden, NY/Dryden) had the next top finish for the Saxons, scoring the final two points of the day in the 400-meter dash. He edged out the third finisher from Nazareth College as he ran a 52.38 while the Golden Flyer ran a 52.77. Morrow was just short of doubling his points to four at fourth place, as St. John Fisher's top runner took that spot with a 52.12.
Neil Peters (The Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.34, pushing out three runners who ran 7.35 times, including two from St. John Fisher.
In the field events,
Papa Dioum (New York, NY/Frederick Douglas Academy) stood out, qualifying for finals in the long jump but just fell short of the podium, vaulting a distance of 5.99m, needing to beat 6.05m (just over two inches in difference). He finished seventh in the event.
Kalum Holbrook (Atlanta, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) just missed finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.83. The Saxons will next finish the championships on Saturday.
