ONEONTA, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team fell on the road to Empire 8 foe, Hartwick College, 169-71 on Saturday afternoon.
The Saxons, closed out a three-meet week that including two long road trips and a home win over Utica College. They began the week with a trip to Division II Le Moyne College on Tuesday before ending the week with the trip to Oneonta, NY.
Both
Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/Saint Andrew's) and
William LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne) had individual wins on the day to lead AU. Terrazas won the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events with times of 1:01.52, edging out the 100-breast win over the Hawks' second place time of 1:01.76 and a 1:01.93 finish by teammate,
Justin Jarmer (Flagstaff, AZ/Northland Preparatory Academy), and a 2:16.41 in the 200. LaMastus won both backstroke events. He led a clean, one-two-three sweep of the 100 with a time of 55.89, leading
Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and
Nathan Sponenberg (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia). He then teamed again with Volaski for a one-two finish in the 200-back, swimming respective times of 2:03.44 and 2:03.60.
Terrazas also picked up a second place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:06.90.
"Having come off of a couple other meets this week, with one being yesterday; I was pretty impressed with the effort and results shown today," Head Coach
Brian Striker '00 said. "They have been working hard and continue to impress me with their attitude and resolve. As we continue to deal with some holes in our lineups, it is great from a coaching perspective to see people step up and fill in where they can. This coming week, we will regroup, get ready for our senior meet next weekend, and then get ready for final preparations for our championship meet!"

Lagos Canales (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) had the final second place finish in individual events as he swam a 56.52 in the 100-yard butterfly. He took part in two second place relay finishes as he began the day alongside LaMastus, Terrazas, himself and
Paul Tuttle (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) in the 200-medley relay, combining for a time of 1:40.16. They were narrowly edged out of first place with Hartwick's time of 1:39.71. To close out the week, the 200-free relay team of Lagos Canales, Tuttle,
Andrew Yates (Naples, NY/Naples) and Jarmer also took a close defeat, finishing second with a time of 1:32.01, just short of the first place time of 1:31.54.
The Saxons will next host Ithaca College on Saturday, January 22 at 1:00pm in the McLane Natatorium as they will recognize the careers of their seniors from both the men's and women's programs, competing in their final intercollegiate meet in Alfred.
