BRADFORD, PA – The Alfred University women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon, defeating Mount Aloysius in five sets and falling in three to the host Pitt-Bradford.

The Saxons (6-7, 0-1 Empire 8) almost cleared Aloysius in three sets as they won both the first and second sets but dropped the third in extra points, 28-26. The final set scoreline for AU was 25-20, 25-13, 26-28, 21-25, 15-13. In the nightcap against Pitt-Bradford, AU lost in three, 25-15, 25-11, 25-13.

"Today was a day full of adversity for us in regard to injuries, illness and other outside factors, so to come out with a split on the day is huge" Head Coach
Dakota Pruiss said. "I think we had good leadership from Amanda [Burns] and Darian [Ortiz] throughout the first match and I was excited of the characteristics we played with in the second match as that was a discussion point after a tough five-set victory."

In the first match, AU was led by
Sarah Raeman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) and her 17.5 points from 16 kills, one solo block and block assist.
Amanda Burns (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) had another five-set match with over 40 set assists as she totaled a double-double with 43 assists and 15 digs.

Darian Ortiz (Santa Fe, NM/St. Michael's) led the defense with 23 digs as another two Saxons joined her and Burns in double-digit digs.
Jamie Chun (Hilo, HI/Hilo) and
Anjoeline Armstrong (Simi Valley, CA/Bishop Alemany) both recorded 10 digs in the match. Chun was right behind Raeman with 16.0 points as she had 14 kills and two aces.

Ortiz also almost broke a school record in five-set service aces as she totaled six in the match, just one away from
Danielle VanCott and her seven against Utica College in 2008. Armstrong supplemented the 14 team aces with four of her own.

Fiona McNeil (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) led the net defense with four block assists and two solo blocks as she totaled 8.0 points, adding four kills.

Armstrong led AU defensively in the second match with 12 digs while Burns added 10 en route to another double-double on the day with 13 set assists. Raeman totaled 6.0 points from six kills while McNeil followed with 5.0 points all from kills as well as she hit a .357 from 14 attacks and no errors.

The Saxons will next continue Empire 8 action as they travel to Houghton College on Wednesday, September 29 for a 7:00pm start.
