Women's Swimming & Diving Ties Fredonia; Falls to U. of Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University women's swimming & diving team tied Fredonia while dropping a simultaneous dual meet decision to University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon.

The Saxons picked up their first win of the day as Mia Spencer (Omaha, NE/Omaha Central) defeated Fredonia in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:17.62 as Rochester swept the event over both AU and Fredonia. Victoria Cramp (Hornell, NY/Hornell) then got free points over Fredonia in the 3-meter diving, finishing second against the Yellowjackets with a score of 218.05.

AU then scored on a one-two-three finish against Fredonia in the 200-yard breaststroke. Spencer led the way with a 2:44.06 with Erika Purdy (Syracuse, NY/Cicero North) and Eden Vallely (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) following. Spencer picked up her third win against the Blue Devils in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:27.59, finishing faster than Fredonia's top time of 2:30.23.

Alfred University got their final win over Fredonia that clinched the tie as the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Ivy Vallely (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Purdy, Eden and Sarah Anderson (Wayne, PA/Radnor) combined for a 1:52.40, out-touching the wall of Fredonia and its time of 1:57.48.

"The growth and momentum of this team has been impressive as we move forward through the season," Head Coach Brian Striker '00 said. "I think this was one of our better dual meet efforts in the past five years or so. The team has created an environment that brings out the best in each of them. We had several breakout performances and many in-season pr's. There are several things we will be working on over the next few weeks as we prepare for the invitational that will wrap up our fall semester."

The Saxons will next make preparations to compete in the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. The three-day invitational will begin on Friday, December 3 at 5:00pm with Saturday and Sunday events beginning at 10:00am each day.
