ALFRED, N.Y. – The Alfred University men's swimming and diving team hosted the University of Rochester and Fredonia in a double-dual format Saturday afternoon from the McLane Center. The Saxons fell to Rochester by a 196-103 score, but defeated Fredonia, 197-93.
The men pulled a few victories during the day.
Noah Koltenuk (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) won in a pair of distance freestyle events. In the 1,000-yard freestyle he pulled away late, winning the event in 10:15.18. The 500-yard freestyle was a different story, as he barely touched ahead of Rochester's Eric Weidman, beating the Rochester foe by 19-hundreths of a second (4:57.23).
Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington) won in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in a time of 1:58.21. Volaski also finished second in the 100-yard backstroke, a time of 55.32.
Other strong times included a pair of second-place finishes by
Dylan Canaveral (Queens, N.Y.). He finished second in a close call in the 100-yard butterfly (54.42) and in the 100-yard freestyle (50.24). Also placing second was
Logan Cross (Olean, N.Y./Olean) on the 1-meter boards, finishing a six-dive score of 261.70.
Billy Mirenda (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink) (187.55) and
Max Sereno (Victor, N.Y./Victor) (142.80) also competed at 1-meter.
On the relay front, the team of
Drew Edmister (Belmont, N.Y./Genesee Valley Central), Volaski,
Vincent Tamplain (Luling, La./Hahnville), and
Ryan Brown (Olean, N.Y./Olean) finished third in the 200-yard medley relay, with a time of 1:43.68. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of
Yunneng Du (Yorktown, Va), Bailey Roes (Pittsford, N.Y./Mendon), Canaveral, and
Luke Foery (York, Pa./West York) finished fourth in a time of 1:32.34.
"I thought today went really well," said head coach
Brian Striker. "There were a lot of things that happened in the pool that we haven't seen in a while. We are putting things together that makes me feel confident as we move forward this season. Both teams are really supportive of each other and the atmosphere was great. If we keep working the way we do, we will start seeing some of these wins."
The Saxons will take a month-long break from action, returning for the Ithaca College Invitational, from Dec. 6-8 in Ithaca.
