ALFRED, N.Y. – It was a dominating performance in the pool for the Alfred University men's swimming and diving teams, as the Saxons defeated Pitt-Bradford by a 142-63 score for their first victory of the season, from McLane Natatorium Friday evening.
Alfred improves to 1-2, while Pitt-Bradford falls to 0-1.
It was smooth sailing for the Saxon men, who won all but one non-exhibition event on its way to victory.
The most thrilling event of the night ended in a virtual tie. In the 50-yard freestyle,
R.J. Zellner (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) and
Kyle McGlynn (Lewiston, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) swam neck and neck, and both competitors finished with a time of 24.85.
The men's 200-yard medley relay teams finished 1-2, as the quartet of
Phill Volaski (Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington),
Colin Schultz (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport),
Dylan Canaveral (Queens, N.Y.), and
Ryan Brown (Olean, N.Y./Olean) finished in a winning time of 1:44.05. The team of Zellner,
Yunneng Du (Yorktown, Va./TABB),
Justin Chadima (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island), and
Vincent Tamplain (Luling, La./Hahnville) finished in 1:49.53. Volaski and Canaveral also added individual victories to their team win. Volaski won the 200-yard IM by under 11 seconds, with a time of 2:02.19, while Canaveral beat the minute mark in the 100-yard butterfly, a winning time of 55.13.
Other victors included
Luke Foery's (York, Penn./West York) dominating victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing over 24 seconds ahead in a time of 10:49.11. Brown and Tamplain also earned individual wins. Brown touched first in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 50.98, while Tamplain won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:53.86.
On the boards,
Logan Cross (Olean, N.Y./Olean) finished ahead of teammates
Billy Mirenda (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink) and
Max Sereno (Victor, N.Y./Victor) on the 1-meter platform. Cross earned 243.35 points, while Mirenda and Sereno finished with 188.40 and 135.90 points, respectively. On 3-meters, Mirenda earned the high score of 159.23.
The Saxons jump right back into the pool on Saturday, hosting Fredonia State and the University of Rochester in a tri-meet from McLane Natatorium. The diving portion will begin at 11 a.m., with the rest of the meet starting at 1 p.m.
