Fresh Saxons Display Strong Performances in Men's Swimming & Diving Season Starter

Results

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team displayed multiple top finishes in its 2019-20 season-opener at home, in the Lebohner Pool against Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon despite a 183-117 loss.

The Saxons were led by first-year Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and junior Noah Koltenuk (Danville, PA/Danville) as they both picked up a pair of individual wins. Volaski scored the most individual points with wins in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke races. He swam a 54.51 in the 100 and a 1:57.96 in the 200. Volaski tacked on a second place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:01.64.

Koltenuk won both the 1,000-yard and 500-yard freestyle, having put in more competition yards than the majority of athletes in the pool. He swam a 10:13.66 in the 1K to win by 16 seconds and then had a closer finish in the 500 with a 4:58.15. He also had a third place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.86 to follow first-year Dylan Canaveral (Queens, NY) who took second with a 2:04.11.

Canaveral was the only other Saxon to pick up a win as he swam a 50.15 to get the gold in the 100-yard freestyle. He teamed with Vincent Tamplain (Luling, LA/Hahnville) to pick up another 2-3 finish on the day as Canaveral took second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.01 and Tamplain swam a 56.37.

The Saxon scoring was rounded out with two second place finishes as Bailey Roes (Pittsford, NY/Mendon) swam a 1:51.64 in the 200-yard freestyle and Logan Cross (Olean, NY/Olean) set a career-high on the 3-meter diving board with a score of 197.03.

"The first meet is typically a rough one, and we fought hard throughout and showed a great deal of enthusiasm," Head Coach Brian Striker '00 said. "Despite the score, we had a lot of great races today, including a few that could have had a better outcome. We were a little sloppy at the walls and finishes – things we will be working on over the next two weeks. This is a young program; there is a great deal of potential for this team as we gain experience."

The Saxons will next head to Nazareth College for a 6 p.m. meet start on Friday, November 1.
