ALFRED, NY – Host Alfred University shut out Brooklyn College, 1-0, Saturday evening to win the Bryan Karl '86 Alumni Classic men's soccer tournament.
Senior defender
James Piombino's (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) goal off a corner kick with 14:22 left in regulation proved to be the game winner. With the win, the Saxons finished the four-team tournament with a 2-0 record. AU defeated Medaille College, 1-0, in the Saxons' first tournament game Friday. Medaille's 2-0 win over SUNY Canton earlier in the day clinched the tournament title for AU, as no other team could finish with two wins.
While Alfred (3-1-0) dominated play throughout Saturday's contest, they found themselves in a scoreless tie with the Bulldogs. AU outshot the visitors, 19-9, and held an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
But with 14:22 left, sophomore defender
Brennan Jelstrom (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) sent a corner kick into the Brooklyn box. Sophomore
Alexander Tostanoski (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) took an initial shot, which was deflected by a Brooklyn defender right to Piombino, who blasted the shot past Brooklyn keeper
Jerron Streete.
AU junior goalie
Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) stopped three shots for AU to earn the shutout, while Streete made six saves for Brooklyn (1-3-0).
The tournament concludes Sunday when Canton takes on Brooklyn at 1 p.m. Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 3 p.m. at Pitt-Bradford.
