ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team ended its regular season ahead of the Empire 8 Championship Tournament with a 2-0 win over visiting Waynesburg University on Wednesday evening from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (8-3-4, 5-2-4 Empire 8) put both goals on the board in the first half. The Yellowjackets (8-8-2, 5-5-1 PAC) ended their regular season with a scoreless effort as
Connor Russell (Canastota, NY/Canastota) made four saves in goal and
AJ Giaquinto (Burnt Hills, NY/ Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) made one defensive save in the first half.
Offensively,
Jackson Eagle Jantas (Metuchen, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) was in on both goals of the match. He first chipped back a pass to
Hamza Kromah (Margibi, Liberia/Western Reserve Academy) who would score the opening and ultimately game-winning goal just over 13 minutes into play. Giaquinto headed a ball at the Waynesburg goalie who knocked it back to the feet of Jantas who then played it high into the bottom of the crossbar and into the goal.
Both teams were relatively even in terms of shots and shots on goal with AU taking 17 shots with nine on goal and WU placing five of their 13 shots on goal. Waynesburg held a distinct advantage in corner kick opportunities as they stepped to the corner 10 times compared to Alfred's four trips. "I thought the guys worked very hard and grinded it out against a very talented team," Head Coach
Garret Eldridge said.
The Saxons will next head to No. 3 seeded Nazareth University on Saturday, October 31 for the opening round of the Empire 8 Championship Tournament with the first touch scheduled to take place at 2:00pm.
