Box Score ELMIRA, NY—The Alfred University men's soccer (6-1-2, E8 1-0-1) team tied, 3-3, in double overtime against Elmira College on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Saxons fell behind early in the 12
th minute to the Soaring Eagles, but quickly answered back in the 23
rd minute on a
James Piombino (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) header. The goal was Piombino's second of the year off a
Richard Lander (Narrowsburg, NY/Sullivan West) free kick.
Elmira threated to score in the 38
th minute, but the Soaring Eagles were turned away by sophomore
Chris Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East). Both teams bolstered a goal each heading into the intermission.
The second half was full of action with both teams scoring two goals. Elmira jumped out to a 3-1 lead with goals in the 48
th and 55
th minutes by Michael Bryant. However, a minute after Bryant's second goal, Lander took advantage of a penalty kick opportunity to bring the Saxons within one.
With time running out, AU stayed calm, knowing they could create opportunities throughout the game. Finally, in the 88
th minute
Omar Mohamed (Kukuma, Kenya/Edison Tech) knotted the game up by tipping a free kick into the corner of the net on a Lander free kick. As regulation came to an end, the game was tied at three.
Neither team was able to put a shot on goal in the first overtime, as neither defense would break. Sophomore
Jesse Lichtman (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) headed a shot on goal in the 105
th minute, but was turned away by Austin Mansell. Lander tried his luck with 24 seconds left on the clock but Mansell turned the Saxons away for a final time. As the final buzzer rang, the game remained tied, 3-3.
Gutierrez played 110 minutes in goal for AU making two saves.
The Saxons have a week off before traveling to Rochester, NY next Saturday to take on Empire 8 competitor, Nazareth College.
