Late goal lifts AU over Elmira, 12-11

ELMIRA, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team improved to 3-5 on the season with a 12-11 win over Elmira College, Saturday afternoon on the road. This win moves Alfred to 1-2 in Empire 8 play and drops Elmira to 0-3.  
           
Senior midfielder Brendan Sullivan (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) netted two goals in the first quarter, and senior attack Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) scored two goals in the second quarter to help AU to a 6-5 lead at halftime.
           
The Soaring Eagles outscored the Saxons 2-1 after three frames of play, bringing the score to 7-7 headed into the fourth quarter.
           
Alfred opened the fourth quarter with four straight goals, giving the Saxons an 11-8 lead, until Elmira answered with three back-to-back goals, tying the score at 11-11 with 3:30 minutes left to play. Carroll notched the game-winning goal inside three minutes, securing the AU win.
           
Carroll (five ground balls, three caused turnovers) and Sullivan both finished with five and four goals each. Sophomore midfielder Tanner Morse (Corning, NY/Corning East) (three assists), freshman midfielder Derek Bishopp (Livonia, NY/Livonia), and freshman midfielder Nick Skibitsky (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East) all added a goal apiece.
           
Freshman midfielder Jimmy Pratti (Minisink, NY/Minisink Valley) went 14 of 26 on face-offs and earned eight ground balls. Senior defender Pat Walsh (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) scooped up six groundballs.
          
Junior goalie Cody O'Connor (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) went the distance in net, making eight saves.
           
Alfred resumes play on Monday, April 7, at 4 p.m. against Houghton.
