HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University men's track & field team competed at the Houghton Highlander Invitational on Saturday.
"Our goal was to see where each athlete's fitness level was today," Head Coach
Matt Phillips '10 said. "We had a much needed break at the end of last semester. We've been back for two weeks and are still at the beginning in terms of our training block and where we are trying to get these athletes to by the end of indoor. We got to see a lot of good things today and will now draw up our plans for the next several weeks. I'm very excited for what's to come. This is a young squad with a ton of potential."
The Saxons had three athletes earn Top-10 finishes in the 400-meter dash. They were led by
Jonathan Hodges (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) who clocked a winning time of 52.03.
Riley Ciamarra (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) followed in fourth place with a time of 53.52.
Zach Schultz (Middleport, NY/Royalton-Hartland) took sixth place, running a 53.84.
Those three were joined by
Aidan Bieron (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West) in the 4x400-meter relay as they combined for a time of 3:39.65, earning third place in the event. Bieron added a sixth place finish in the 800-meters, running a time of 2:07.39.
Seth Stevens (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and
Jacob Taylor (Cohocton, NY/Avoca) finished fifth and sixth among college competitors (an unattached runner finished sixth overall, pushing Taylor to a seventh place finish) in the men's mile run. Stevens finished with a time of 4:39.31 while Taylor ran a 4:41.50.
In the field,
Daimel Fowler (Baldwinsville, NY/CW Baker) finished seventh in the shot put, throwing a mark of 12.49m (40'-11.75"). He added a ninth place finish in the weight throw, tossing it 12.20m (40'-0.5").
Back on the track,
David Winchenbach (Jefferson, ME/Lincoln Academy) qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.16 to be seeded eighth. In the finals, he moved up a place with a time of 9.09.
Khamani Hunter Sr (Poughkeepsie, NY/FDR) just missed earning a spot in the 60-meter dash finals. He posted a time of 7.22 but a tiebreak scenario where they had to add more decimals meant he finished ninth and out of the finals by 0.009 seconds.
The Saxons will next take a trip for a two-day meet at Youngstown State University on Friday, January 30 and Saturday, January 31.
