GROVE CITY, PA - The Alfred University men's basketball team returned to action with a 69-42 loss at Grove City College on Friday afternoon.

Nolan Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) led Alfred University with a team-high 23 points, shooting 9-of-10 from the field. 

"Certainly not our best," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "I thought we did a good job fighting back and cutting it to one point midway through the second half and then it looked like we ran out of gas the last 8-9 minutes of the game. We're not happy with where we're at - so we are excited to get back to work for conference play."

The Saxons trailed early in the first half, but scoring from Gilbert kept AU within reach. The defense for Alfred University held Grove City to just four points across the final two minutes of the opening half, but the team still trailed 32-16 going into the break. A deep shot by Tyler Hind (Randolph, NY/Randolph) sparked a 9-0 opening run for the Saxons to start the second half. Additional scoring from Gilbert and Zion Baitey (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) cut the deficit to a single point with 13 minutes remaining. Grove City responded with consistent scoring down the home stretch, ultimately pulling away for the victory. 

Alfred University will next return to Empire 8 competition at St. John Fisher University on Tuesday at 7:30 PM.
