ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team wrapped up their Spring Break with a 14-4 win over Morrisville State on Saturday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (2-3, 0-0 Empire 8) registered 40 shots on goal, tying their highest total of the season. AU additionally converted 26 clear attempts, their highest mark dating back to the 2018 season.
Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks) finished the game with three goals and an assist.
Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport) totaled three goals along with one assist.
Cole Loewke (Hilton, NY/Hilton) added three goals and a pair of assists for AU.
"It was great to back on the winning track," Head Coach
Jason Lockner said. "Our specialty units in goal and the face off X did a great job. We are working hard to put all the pieces of the puzzle together to get ready for conference play. Cunningham played excellent defense today."
The Saxons got on the scoreboard in the early moments of the first quarter thanks to a goal by Loweke. After Morrisville tied the game, AU relied on a goal from Matson to take back the lead. The Mustangs scored once more before both Matson and Loewke scored again to take a 4-2 advantage into the second quarter.
Early goals by Riley and
Mike Halsey (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) extended the lead for Alfred University in the second quarter. Matson, Riley and
Nick Volpe (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) each contributed with goals across the final eight minutes of the half, while
Quinn Sullivan (Elmira, NY/Elmira) picked up four saves in the quarter before AU went into halftime with a 9-2 lead.
The offensive success for AU continued in the second half, as Loewke and
Keagan Hoesterey (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) each found the back of the net. An assist from Halsey to Matson in the closing minute of the third quarter had the Saxons ahead in 12-3 fashion with one quarter to play. The Mustangs scored once in the final quarter of regulation, but the Saxons responded with goals from Riley and
Drew Smith (Walworth, NY/Ruben A. Cirillo) before coming away with the win.
Alfred University will next begin Empire 8 competition at Russell Sage College next Saturday at 1:00 PM.
